That it wasn\u2019t about the papers they turned in<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The grades spread out across a digital grid<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The products, the GPAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I would tell them<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education is about<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s left after you take away the papers<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And grades<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your brain should be rewired to<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be smarter<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To know more<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To think better<\/p>\n\n\n\n
yet now I regret that my metaphor<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Was technological<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Implying that the human mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is a machine<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now I\u2019d like to find<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A more organic metaphor<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To explain how learning changes and expands the mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spider web with more and more threads<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of connection catching new things<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lake with many streams<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Running into it from different sources<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A tree growing ever deeper roots<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While above the limbs and branches and twigs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grow upwards and outwards<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crisscrossing and interconnecting<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Branches of knowledge indeed<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or a bird\u2019s nest gathering twigs and sticks<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And weaving them together into a place to live in<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rewiring implies<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upgrading to better chips and semiconductors<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More memory<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More RAM<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faster processing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More efficiency<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More transactions<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But webs and lakes and trees and nests<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Are not efficient<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They grow slowly<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deliberately<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transformationally<\/p>\n\n\n\n
