That’s been the question for years now, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the walls close in to crush <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The teaching profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First they came for the curriculum <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And tried to prevent us from <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Actually thinking about what we taught<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To make us into teacher-bots with no humanity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then they came for the students, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turning them into data-points, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Into learner-bots with no humanity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then they came for the books and authors <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And cast a shadow over every book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everybook is suspect now – <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acceptable books are now the exception. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When teachers are supposed to ask permission<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To teach even the tiniest poem<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And writing is only about the topics <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They approve of,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They do not value literacy anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They value control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Control over what students are allowed to call themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Control over what can be discussed <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And what views are acceptable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Compliance is not learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But compliance is all they are asking for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thinking is discouraged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Questioning is practically forbidden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are all slaves to the Test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not how education should work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education should not be an ever-narrowing <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Corridor leading to a single pre-made door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If it has to be a corridor, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It should be a corridor that widens, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And opens onto infinite doors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has seldom been a worse time to be a teacher <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Who actually teaches students to think,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To question, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To create. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But there has also never been<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A more important time to be a teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n
