{"id":171,"date":"2019-09-25T20:12:57","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T00:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrfitz.com\/blog\/?p=171"},"modified":"2019-09-25T20:12:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T00:12:57","slug":"the-new-ideal-teacher-a-poem-from-4-1-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrfitz.com\/blog\/the-new-ideal-teacher-a-poem-from-4-1-12\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Ideal Teacher &#8211; A Poem (from 4-1-12)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is driven by data,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And kids become points<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On her test-score schemata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winnie is a &#8220;1&#8221; and must be forced to make a gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theo is a &#8220;3&#8221; and that&#8217;s a score he must maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freddy is a &#8220;5&#8221;; there&#8217;s no more room inside his brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wants things she can measure;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it fits on a chart,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then it&#8217;s something to treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the new ideal teacher,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s shame or it&#8217;s merit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s caught in between&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, a stick and a carrot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scores control her destiny, for better or for worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If scores are high, then there could be more money in her purse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If low she might discover her career is in a hearse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ideal teacher&#8217;s wallet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is empty or padded<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on value<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deducted or added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does not plan her lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her classes are all pre-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fab learning-gains sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today is lesson thirty-seven; tomorrow&#8217;s thirty-eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Page by page the pacing guide ensures she won&#8217;t run late,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the teacher down the hall and in some other state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original thought<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s been taught<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To self-censor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pops lessons out like a big Pez dispenser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t question or query.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She does as she&#8217;s told;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;s compliant and cheery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When someone says, &#8220;It&#8217;s best for kids!&#8221; she&#8217;ll never even blink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she is told her pay&#8217;s been cut, her spirits never sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When buried under new reforms, she&#8217;ll never raise a stink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&#8217;ll teach critical thinking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a book off the shelf,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she never would think<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She might think for herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can prioritize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She puts first things first,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And she won&#8217;t compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good test scores are number one; they lead to higher pay,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which, of course, is number two&#8211; more money makes her day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fidelity is third: give her a script; she&#8217;ll never stray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new ideal teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is stalwart and steadfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system comes first,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So her students come dead last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new ideal teacher Is driven by data, And kids become points On her test-score schemata.
