Our metaphors of the mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Morph across time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is the mind a container? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An aviary? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A garden?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A clockwork? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A machine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We think metaphorically<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because that is what minds do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the best metaphor<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is Mind as metaphor generator. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet any single metaphor conceals <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At least as much as it reveals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today we seem to reduce the mind <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To a computer: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A fancier container, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But still<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A container. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of filling it we download <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Things onto it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We reduce learning to <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transferring data onto the hard drive of the mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education = Data Transfer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it is a mistake to <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To mistakenly identify<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The human mind with any machine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The human mind grew out of nature<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And natural metaphors have more to teach us <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than machine metaphors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The human mind is more like a garden<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than an assembly line,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More like a river, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than an internal combustion engine<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More like a tree <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than a catapult, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
More like an aviary <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than a drone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More like a spider web,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Than a hard drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hard drive can only receive data<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And store it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the human mind <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Can perceive<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And feel <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And respond <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And view from different angles<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And analyze through many lenses <\/p>\n\n\n\n
and imagined points of view<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And grow curious<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And long<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And inquire<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And investigate<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And imitate<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And transform <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And connect<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And invent <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And imagine<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All that and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But we treat it like a bucket, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pouring things in so we can measure what comes out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even the word is more than one thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet we wonder why <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These minds we measure, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t want to mind us, <\/p>\n\n\n\n
