{"id":335,"date":"2020-04-25T18:37:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-25T22:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrfitz.com\/blog\/?p=335"},"modified":"2020-04-25T18:37:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T22:37:30","slug":"metaphors-of-the-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrfitz.com\/blog\/metaphors-of-the-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Metaphors of the Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We think about the mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With our minds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s very meta.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our metaphors of the mind<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morph across time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is the mind a container?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An aviary?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A garden?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A clockwork?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A machine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We think metaphorically<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because that is what minds do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the best metaphor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is Mind as metaphor generator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet any single metaphor conceals&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least as much as it reveals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we seem to reduce the mind&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To a computer:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fancier container,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But still<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A container.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of filling it we download&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things onto it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We reduce learning to&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transferring data onto the hard drive of the mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education = Data Transfer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is a mistake to&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mistakenly identify<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human mind with any machine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human mind grew out of nature<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And natural metaphors have more to teach us&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than machine metaphors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human mind is more like a garden<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than an assembly line,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More like a river,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than an internal combustion engine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More like a tree&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than a catapult,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More like an aviary&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than a drone,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More like a spider web,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Than a hard drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hard drive can only receive data<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And store it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the human mind&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can perceive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And feel&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And respond&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And view from different angles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And analyze through many lenses&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and imagined points of view<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And grow curious<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And long<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And inquire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And investigate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And imitate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And transform&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And connect<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And invent&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And imagine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All that and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we treat it like a bucket,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pouring things in so we can measure what comes out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the word is more than one thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet we wonder why&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These minds we measure,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t want to mind us,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet they do mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We think about the mind With our minds.&nbsp; It\u2019s very meta.&nbsp; Our metaphors of the mind Morph across time.&nbsp; Is the mind a container?&nbsp; An aviary?&nbsp; A garden?
